We have four cats and, let me tell you, I have tried so many cat litters. Before I found this cat litter, I swore my kitties were grabbing little pawfuls of litter and were casually sprinkling it all around our house like their own cat fairy dust. I was sweeping at least twice a day, and more often if expecting company. It was awful, and I just figured it was part of having both hardwood floors and cats in the same house.
A really good coupon at one of my local grocery stores helped me learn how wrong I was. For years, I bought the huge yellow 35-pound pail of Tidy Cats litter (in varying scents and types), and for all those years, it was always ALL over our carpeted apartment and (after moving) our hardwood floored house.
On occasion, I’d try different brands of kitty litter, but I never liked any of the new ones enough to change my go-to since the results were always the same or worse— that is until a few months ago when I had a manufacturer coupon for a few bucks off of Arm & Hammer Slide Cat Litter. I bought it because it was a good deal and we go through a lot of litter with four cats, not because I had high expectations. And truthfully, I WILL NEVER GO BACK!
Y’all, my life now involves sweeping a few times a week (just because a house needs swept), instead of a few times a day because of cat litter strewn everywhere.
I honestly feel gypped that I didn’t try this essentially-no-tracking cat litter sooner. We have four litter boxes, and with the Slide cat litter, it does get outside the litter box when our cats jump/walk out of the litter box, BUT it only ever is within a foot or so of the litter box where the cats originally step out. I have cat litter mats that catch the minuscule amount of stuck-to-paw litter, so it’s no problem. I also recommend extra larger (and thereby extra deep) litter pans to help keep any brand of litter inside it better. This is doubly helpful if your cat will not use an enclosed litter box or if you happen to have a large cat.
I’ve used the grocery store Godsend for a few months now. Here are the other factors behind why I think Arm & Hammer Slide cat litter is superior to my former go-to Purina Tidy Cats litter.
Actually Dust-Free Cat Litter
The Slide litter is 100% dust-free. Big deal, you might say, the Tidy Cats litter is 99.9% dust-free according to the packaging. Well, my cat-having friends, I don’t know how only POINT 1% of dust can be such a massive difference, but it is! That .1% of Tidy Cats litter dust is actually enough that we end up with litter dust on the surrounding floor and nearby items (Ew!), not to mention that it made us head-turn and hold our breath while cleaning the litter boxes to avoid inhaling it. I no longer worry about that! The Slide litter is totally 100% dust-free, like it says.
It Actually Clumps Amazingly Well
This may be TMI, but you’re reading about cat litter, so whatever. The Slide litter and Tidy Cats litter both clump, but they do so very differently.
The Slide cat litter has a more sand-like texture in comparison to the little individual bead-like pieces of Tidy Cats litter. This difference in texture/consistency works wonders for clumping around both cat urine and cat poop. It forms around whatever waste is in the litter box instantly and instead of cementing bricks of urine to the corners or bottom of the litter box the way Tidy Cats cat litter does, the Slide litter simply forms a clump around the shape of the waste and makes it super easy to scoop. No more tough to scrape litter clumps! Another huge perk, the Slide litter also doesn’t shatter or make you have to chip away at the clumps of cat urine into a bunch of pieces, including those small, little pieces that inevitably fall through the scooper.
I would argue that both litters perform very similarly in terms of trapping odors. Both seem to do so well, especially in comparison to other litter brands I’ve tried. The main differences in smell-trapping here, are additional pros for the Slide litter— 1. The Slide cat litter is truly dust-free, so it doesn’t have that dusty smell at all when cleaning, and 2. The Tidy Cats litter seems to unlock the pungent, horrid ammonia smell in the urine when cleaning the litter boxes. My best guess for why this odor unleashing takes place is that the litter breaks into pieces often when the urine clumps are being scooped and this allows the smell to be released. Thankfully, this doesn’t occur with the Slide cat litter.
More Slide Cat Litter Perks (Beside It Being More-or-Less Trackless Litter)
The Slide cat litter is intended to be very easy to dump out completely, and this holds true to its name. It does NOT stick to the sides or bottom of the litter pan. I, personally, do not fully replace all the litter in our litter boxes on a weekly basis. They get cleaned every other day, and dumping out all the litter to fully replace it weekly is unnecessary in our household and would be too costly. It almost has a kinetic sand texture, and I love that it doesn’t get stuck to the litter box or the scooper at all. (Speaking of scoopers, after breaking a few on hardened clumps of Tidy Cat litter over the years, this is my all time favorite durable litter scooper and the universal scooper holder I use. It is huge and makes cleaning a quick chore.)
More in terms of saving money, the Slide cat litter typically costs a couple dollars more than the Tidy Cats litter, but the time that I’ve regained from not having to constantly sweep each time a cat used the litter box or wipe up dust is so worth that. It comes in a 37-lb box on Amazon, and I love that it ships to my door. I sometimes buy it through Chewy, but the largest size they sell is only 16-lb, and it’s not as good of a deal and obviously doesn’t last us as long. Amazon so far has the best price on this litter for the size.
Try it, I really don’t think you will regret it! I seriously wish I had found this non-tracking cat litter sooner. This is not a sponsored post, I just really think more people (and kitties) need better cat litter in their lives. Our three parking lot rescues and one shelter rescue all approve, too!
